Helicopter Madness at Akeno Airbase, May 16, 18 & 20
|
|
On May 16 we took the train from Nagoya to Matsusaka, here we had our room at the Toyoko-inn. We had a rental car next to Matsusaka station and before noon we drove to Akeno were our dreams came true!! If you thought Gilze-Rijen was great... then Akeno exceeds your wildest fantasies! We started at a spot east of the field, which resulted in: choppers up to 10 meters, sliding Cobra's and Hueys falling out of the sky. When sun light conditions became too bad, we drove to the south side of the small field. This was great again, hovering Cobras and Apaches at 10 meters and other low flying choppers joining the Akeno circuit madness. And we watched it all joyfully! So the 16th of May we stayed half a day and already counted 24 airframes flying!! The next day, at the 20th, we spent the whole day there and counted 18 choppers. We stayed late as we saw the sun was about to set around 7pm just behind the base and some choppers where still parked outside awaiting night flying operations!! The last day, the 20th we stayed the morning until 1pm before heading to Hiroshima by Bullet Train! |
